The Ryder Cup is a golf competition that is being held every other year by teams representing Europe and the United States. With the exception of a decade from 1937 to 1947 because of World War 2 and 2001 when the United States suffered terrorists’ attacks on September 11, the Ryder Cup has been held regularly every 2 years. The formal inception of the Ryder Cup was in 1927 however there were already informal competitions that were held prior. Gleneagles held a series of matches in `1921 before the British Open started at St Andrews. A competition between amateur golfers from the United States and Britain, called the Walker Cup, was held in 1922 and this stirred thoughts about having a similar golf competition open to professional golfers.
Samuel Ryder, a wealthy English businessman that made his fortune as a seed merchant, was able to watch these unofficial matches and decided to commission a golf trophy for the event in mind, thus the Ryder Cup was born. Among all golf trophies that are given away in golf events, the Ryder Cup, which is the name of the golf trophy itself, is one of those that has the highest prestige because players fight for their own countries. This makes the Ryder Cup as one of the most sought after golf trophies for professionals.
Before the Ryder Cup was presented in 1927, Samuel Ryder had it commissioned in 1926. An avid golfer himself, Ryder got started in golf by hiring Hill, a professional from a local golf course that taught him the fundamentals. Ryder then hired Abe Mitchell as his private tutor and paid him £1000 per year.
As a golf trophy, the Ryder Cup was commissioned for £250. The trophy is solid gold and has been polished for a sparkling shine. From top to bottom, the trophy stands 17 inches high. This golf trophy was crafted with 2 handles on opposite sides of the cup. On top of the trophy is a figure of a man playing golf. Ryder says that the image reflected is that of his tutor Abe Mitchell who was not able to compete in the inaugural matches due to appendicitis. This golf trophy has a custom built flight case that is used to transport it from its venues. This flight case is made by Dragon Cases of Wales and was made to the highest specifications. It makes use of a heat resistant plywood structure with zinc plated steel hardware and aluminum extrusions. To support every single inch of the Ryder Cup golf trophy, a high density foam block is cut to its exact shape.
The last Ryder Cup was held at the well known Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, Wales in 2010 where team Europe won the said golf competition. The 2012 Ryder Cup will be moving back to the United States and will be held in Medinah, Illinois’ Medinah Country Club where team US aims to gain back the Ryder Cup golf trophy. This indeed is one of the best golf events that is a must watch for all golf enthusiasts worldwide.
