It has become a major sport played all around the world and a multimillion dollar industry with a huge market that is being served by golf attire and equipment manufacturers.

The origin of golf has been widely debated by the Scots and Brits for over a long time. A stained glass window in Gloucester Cathedral resembles a man playing golf which the Brits hold as an undeniable proof to their claim. In Scotland, golf was banned in 1457 because it interfered with archery practice. This piece of history is the Scot’s claim to golf.

In spite of the wide debate about the origins of golf, its current popularity is undeniable and shows no signs of slowing down soon. There are many golf events around the United Kingdom and many of them are major tournaments like the PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) Seniors Championship. The PGA Seniors Championship kicked off in 1957 and is a golf competition of the European Seniors Tour that is especially held for men aged 50 and above. The event was hosted by the Royal Dublin Club in 1992 when the European Seniors Tour was founded and has been played in various clubs in English from 1993 onwards.

The PGA Seniors Championship has now given a total of 55 coveted Alfred S. Borne golf trophies as it is held annually for 55 years now in 7 venues, the latest being in The De Vere Club. The seniors of England have dominated this golf competition having won 26 golf trophies under their belt from 6 individuals. This is followed by Ireland with 8 golf trophies, Australia with 7 and Scotland with 6. The 6 out of 8 titles won by Ireland is by Christy O’Connor Snr, who has the most number of titles won in the history of England’s PGA Seniors Championship. The recent winner of the 2011 PGA Seniors Championship is Andrew Oldcorn of Scotland.

Only a handful of deserving individuals have had their hands on the most desirable golf trophy in the PGA Seniors Championship – the Alfred S. Borne. Among all golf trophies in the many golf competitions around the world, the Alfred S. Borne is arguably one of the most elegantly designed. Its namesake, Alfred S. Borne was a well known golfer who, in 1937, donated funds for the creation of this golf trophy. It has since then been awarded yearly to the grand winners of the PGA Seniors Tournament. This is the most coveted prize among golf events for seniors. Some of the famous golf giants that have their name etched on the Alfred S. Borne trophy are Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Hale Irwin among others. The Alfred S. Borne trophy is 40 inches tall, 18 inches wide and is definitely a heavy prize with a weight of 30.5 pounds.

Golf has definitely risen to the occasion and has proven itself as one of the most well-liked sports in the world. The lure of fun and excitement that the game brings to its players and fanatics is unlike any other. The many elegant and huge trophies that different golf events offer to its winners are very eye catching and are worth all the hard work.
