The Great North Run, one of the most famous half marathons will take place on Sunday 13th September 2015.
On your marks, get set go!…….are you ready for the Morrisons Great North Run which is set to take place in just three days time?
Every September the Great North Run takes place in the north east of England. Starting in Newcastle Upon Tyne, the 13.1 mile route heads across the famous and iconic Tyne Bridge, around the east of Gateshead and then onto the finish line on the seafront at South Shields. The event is open to everyone over the age of 17, from beginner to experienced runners. This year's event will once again see a host of elite athletes, celebrities and fun runners cross the finish line.
First across the finish line in 2014 was Olympic hero Mo Farah. He completed the race in exactly one hour. He will return to Tyneside this weekend to defend his Great North Run title by attempting to become the second only Brit to win the elite men’s race for the second time. But for lots of people it’s not about winning, it’s about taking part, its about setting personal challenges and helping to raise lots of money for a host of charities.
The first Great North Run took place in 1981, when 12,000 runners took part. By 2011 the number of participants rose to 54,000. Thirty five years later and it’s considered to be one of the world's biggest running events on the planet with over 57,000 runners taking part.
