The Australian Tennis Open is in full swing as professionals across the globe gather in Melbourne, Australia to compete across five events – the Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. The tournament runs from January 18th to 31st and will see competitors competing for a just over £21 million in total prize money. Andy Murray is the man to root for as the United Kingdom’s representative in the Men’s Singles, although we’re sad to say that there’s nobody from the UK in the Female’s Singles.
The Tennis Trophies to Play For
In the Australian Open players will be competing for two prestigious trophies. Participants in the Women’s Singles are competing for the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup, while participants in the Men’s Singles will be playing for the Norman Brooke’s Challenge Cup. Pictured below are Li Na and Stan Wawrinka, 2014 Women's and Men's Singles champions, each holding their respective tournament trophies.
